The aim of this elective ‘Taster’ module delivered in the first semester of Year 1 is to enable students to become familiar with the subject matter of the programmes offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, to provide insights into how these subjects are taught across the various disciplines, and to stimulate interest in the programme subject areas. The module also contributes to developing the English language and study skills of students within the context of the programmes offered by the School.
A.Demonstrate a familiarity with the subject matter of Humanities and Social Sciences
The module is delivered through six two-hour long sessions, taught by subject specialists in each of the programmes offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Each session will consist of around one hour of formal lecture, in which core concepts, definitions, literature, evidence and illustrative examples will be provided to students on a specific topic within each discipline. This lecture will be interspersed with short consolidation activities to help students review the content being delivered. Students may also be provided with online language and study skills support from the English Language Centre (ELC) to help them engage with module content. Some sessions may be co-delivered with ELC tutors, with the aim of assisting students with the language and study skills requirements of the module.
