Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to cover the fundamentals of materials science, manufacturing processes and their interrelationships. The modern manufacturing process, together with the structure, property, performance of various materials will be introduced in this module. Students will learn the correct use of materials, and their selection process when designing engineering structures and devices in manufacturing. The module will emphasise the interrelationships between part design and manufacturing process design. Students will also learn materials processing and characterisations techniques, and be familiar with the applications in traditional and modern manufacturing industry.

Learning outcomes

A Summarise the role of structural and functional materials and their properties. B Rationalise materials and manufacturing processes for part(s) and explain trade-offs with other possible choices C Identify and appraise the principal applications of materials to industrial and product design. D Explain manufacturing methods, processing limitations and failure mechanisms for different materials. E Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between product quality, manufacturing efficiency, cost and flexibility for major materials and manufacturing processes.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module adopts the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially the use of problem-based assessment which is project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments. This module will be delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Teaching will be conducted using problem-based learning, with problems embedded in the lectures. General transferable skills are developed through the presentation of written and oral reports.
