This module provides students foundations of materials engineering, materials selection, and surface finishings for Industrial Design applications.
A. Summarise the role of engineering materials and their classifications.
B. Identify the principal applications of engineering materials to industrial design.
C. Explain the basic mechanical properties and the failure mechanism of engineering materials.
D. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between microstructure, chemistry, and physical properties of engineering materials.
E. Use basic principles of materials selection process for industrial design.
The content in this module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. In addition, some field trips to manufacturing companies might be organized.
