Aims and Fit of Module

This Year 1 module is designed to prepare students for the BA International Relations programme. It introduces the development of political science and international relations as academic disciplines through an examination of key concepts. Students will have the opportunity to develop basic conceptual and theoretical understanding of social sciences broadly, with a particular focus on political science and international relations, by analyzing these areas in the context of the emergence of the modern world.

A. Demonstrate a basic understanding of key concepts and ideas in international relations and political science B. Demonstrate awareness of the different levels of analysis (subnational, national, international) in the study of international relations C. Apply the key concepts of international relations to explore a specific case study D. Operationalise essential study and research skills relevant to international relations and the broader social sciences E. Communicate concepts, theories, and analyses of international relations effectively

Method of teaching and learning

Teaching on the module is by a combination of lectures and seminars. The lectures will introduce students to key concepts and theories in international relations, using real-world examples to demonstrate how these ideas can be applied to analyze complex issues in global affairs. In the seminars, students will participate in discussions and examine case studies that illustrate the subject matter of each lecture. Through both lectures and seminars, students will develop essential study and research skills, including critical analysis, academic writing, and information gathering, to prepare them for assessments and further studies in Year 2 and beyond.
