Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this Year 1 module is to prepare students for study on the BEng Internet of Things Engineering, BEng Intelligent Robotics Engineering, and BEng Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. The module teaches students about the basic concepts, integration of computing, communication and networking technologies with robotics and intelligent manufacturing, and applications of these complex systems in industry and our daily life. This module boasts lectures to be delivered by invited experts, and labs to enhance the hands-on skills. Each week, there will also be a seminar to introduce students to entrepreneurial aspects of the degree programme.

Method of teaching and learning

Teaching consists of lectures, and lab practicals, with some input from industry partners and experts. There will be lab work where students will learn the operation and control of a computer system by executing computer languages, assembly of a robot, and printing desired products by 3D printing. This module will be assessed by coursework where the completeness and quality of the lab work will be assessed in the lab and a poster to present the lab work. The module will follow an academic literacies approach and some seminars may be co-taught by staff from the English Language Centre, who will use activities to further develop the English language skills of students within the context of the module. Each week there will be a two-hour seminar where students will be able to experience and explore the entrepreneurial aspects of the degree programme.
