Aims and Fit of Module

This module is compulsory for all IMBA students. The International MBA program targets Chinese and expatriate working managers at the middle and senior management level. Many will need specific support in the conventions of academic writing and speaking. LAN905, which is delivered in Semester 1 to all new IMBA students, aims to develop and fine tune academic writing and speaking skills so that the student, who may not have completed previous study in English, or who have been out of an academic environment for many years, are prepared to complete the varied assignments as required of IMBA study.
The main aims of this module are:
a) To examine and practice a range of communication skills in an English-medium academic environment;
b) To deepen students’ understanding of academic English genres and stylistic conventions appropriate to their field of study
c)To develop and practice presentation skills appropriate to their field of study
d) To develop students’ understanding of XJTLU’s Academic Integrity Policy and strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data

Learning outcomes

A Produce writing which synthesizes and evaluates information and arguments from a number of sources
B Understand and use appropriate academic language and style in written and verbal communications
C Deliver a presentation using appropriate language, style, and visual aids.
D. Demonstrate competence in strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be offered in Semester 1 to the students joining the IMBA programme.
The teaching sessions are typically delivered over 4 weekends (usually Friday evening and all day Saturday.)
Throughout this module, tutors will use a variety of communicative language teaching/learning strategies to reach different types of learners.
Students will receive guided self-study to reinforce the instruction. This may include completion of quizzes and tasks on ICE.
