This module is compulsory for postgraduate students, with the exception of MRes students, admitted on the condition of attending the Pre-sessional English course. After completing the Pre-sessional, they must register for and pass this module. Programme Directors may also designate this course as compulsory for students on their programme. It is optional for other Postgraduate students.
The main aims of this module are:
a) To examine and practice a range of written communication skills in an English-medium academic environment;
b) To deepen students’ understanding of academic English written genres and stylistic conventions.
c) To develop students’ understanding of XJTLU’s Academic Integrity Policy and strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data.
A Produce writing which paraphrases and summarises information and arguments from a number of sources
B Understand and use appropriate academic language and style in written communications
C Demonstrate competence in strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data
This module will be offered in Semester 1 of the Academic Year.
The teaching sessions are 2 2-hour seminars each week for 12 weeks. As an hours-based module, students may miss no more than 4 seminars in order to be permitted to submit their summative assessment portfolio.
In addition, there is a 2-hour tutorial for students to receive feedback from their tutor before submitting their summative assessment portfolio.
Throughout this module, tutors will use a variety of communicative language teaching/learning strategies to reach different types of learners.
