Aims and Fit of Module

This module is compulsory for Postgraduate students admitted on the condition of attending the Pre-sessional English course. After completing the Pre-sessional English course, they must register for and pass this module. Programme Directors may also designate this course as compulsory for students on their programme. It is optional for other Postgraduate students.
The main aims of this module are:
a) To examine and practice a range of academic reading and writing skills for an English-medium academic environment;
b) To deepen and extend students’ understanding of academic English written genres.
c) To develop students’ understanding of XJTLU’s Academic Integrity Policy and strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data.

Learning outcomes

A Understand the processes to identify and select information from multiple academic texts
B Evaluate and synthesise information from academic sources to respond appropriately to specified academic tasks
C Demonstrate competence in strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are 1 2-hour seminar each week for 9 weeks. As an hours-based module, students may miss no more than 4 class hours in order to be permitted to submit their summative assessment portfolio.
