This module is optional and open to all postgraduate students. Programme Directors may also designate this course as compulsory for students on their programme.
The main aims of this module are:
a) To examine and practice a range of research-oriented oral communication skills in an English-medium academic environment;
b) To develop students’ understanding of XJTLU’s Academic Integrity Policy and strategies to avoid plagiarism, collusion and the embellishment of data
A Understand and use appropriate academic language, style and structure for research-oriented oral communications
B Demonstrate a range of academic speaking skills, e.g. the ability to contribute to and develop a discussion, take and justify a position, offer and appropriately respond to constructive criticism
C Demonstrate an ability to adhere to academic integrity requirements
This module will be offered in Semester 2 of the Academic Year.
The teaching sessions are 1 2-hour seminar each week for 9 weeks, with additional self-study.
As an hours-based module, students may miss no more than 4 class hours in order to be permitted to submit their summative assessment portfolio.
Throughout this module, tutors will use a variety of communicative language teaching/learning strategies to reach different types of learners.
