Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to introduce students to fundamental methods in which language can be described and analysed. We will examine the structures of languages, with reference to its vocabulary, morphology, and grammar and introduce students to the analysis of sentence structure and encourage them to reflect on their own writing. The module is a sister module to Introduction to Linguistics: Spoken and Written Discourse and serves as a foundation for students on the LNG pathway.

Learning outcomes

A. analyse English sentences in terms of their phrase structure and clause structure; B. identify the key aspects of word classes, word structure and semantics and have an initial understanding of the origin of words in English; C. understand basic ways in Linguistics to examine language structure and language use D. reflect on their own written language

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are divided into two components: lectures and seminars.
