The main aims of the module are:
To provide students with an understanding of the principles of semantics and pragmatics;
For students to analyse linguistic data in terms of semantic and pragmatic principles.
To develop students’ abilities to argue and debate theoretical perspectives using linguistic evidence.
To give students the opportunity to evaluate semantic and pragmatic theories in a cross-cultural context.
A. Demonstrate an understanding of major theoretical perspectives.
B. Evaluate theoretical positions introduced on the course using linguistic evidence
C. Analyse texts in terms of pragmatics
D. Evaluate the cross-cultural validity of theories of lexical semantics and pragmatics
The teaching sessions are divided into two components (Lectures and Tutorials/workshops).
