Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to introduce students to the intersection of nanotechnology and biological systems through a comparative, exploratory lens. It is designed to support transition into university-level learning by developing analytical, communicative, and intercultural skills through collaborative inquiry and reflective discussion. The module forms part of the Semester 1 exploratory interdisciplinary block, emphasising broad exploration rather than specialist training. It explicitly contributes to the LIFE framework by fostering innovation literacy, future-oriented thinking, and engagement with global societal challenges. Suitable for students from any disciplinary background, the module provides a foundational perspective that helps align individual interests with potential future specialisations, thereby supporting pathway alignment across diverse programmes. It also offers contextual relevance for students interested in the School of CHIPS, linking nanoscale concepts to semiconductor and device innovation without requiring prior technical knowledge.

Learning outcomes

A. Describe basic principles of nanotechnology and their potential relevance to biological systems. B. Explain common nanobiotechnology techniques and identify their typical uses. C. Discuss ethical and societal considerations associated with nanotechnological applications, using examples from media or public discourse. D. Communicate comparative perspectives on nanobiotechnology clearly in written and oral formats, and participate constructively in group discussions.

Method of teaching and learning

The Nanobiotechnology module combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The teaching and learning methods are divided into the following components: 1. Lectures: Provide foundational knowledge on nanobiotechnology principles, techniques, and applications. Topics will include nanoparticle synthesis, biomedical applications, and ethical considerations. 2. Tutorials: The module is co-delivered with LIFE through the common Semester 1 Academic Horizons spine. Interactive sessions focused on problem-solving, case studies, and discussions to reinforce the material covered in lectures. Students will engage in collaborative tasks and explore real-world examples of nanobiotechnology applications. This teaching structure ensures a balanced approach to theory, application, and skill development.
