Module Title Sensors and Instrumentation
Module Level Level 2
Module Credits 5.00
Academic Year 2021/22
Semester SEM1

Aims and Fit of Module

This course introduces students to modern instrument and associated system for a given measurement application. The student will learn major sensor such as electrical sensors, electromechanical sensors, temperature detectors, and pressure sensors. The student will learn recommendations on sensor selection more economical and efficient, for smart instrumentations. A project is an integral part of this course and exposes the student to various sensor selection processes and practices.

Learning outcomes

A Understand the physical basis of some common electrical sensors
B Appreciate basic sensor specifications and their interpretation
C Understand the system requirements for a typical measurement system
D Understand common factors that can affect the performance of a measurement system
E Use specific instrumentation to perform simple electro-mechanical tests on an electrical machine to evaluate its performance

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and supervised laboratory sessions.
