This module aims to prepare students for undergraduate study in mathematics. There is quite a gap between high-school and university-level mathematics, which this module hopes to bridge, preparing students for abstract modules in analysis and algebra. The module will explore the power, beauty, and fun of mathematics (in a less formulaic way than, say, calculus) while teaching the art of mathematical proof and writing through simple examples.
A Demonstrate a foundational understanding of standard notation, logic and reasoning for university-level mathematics. B Interpret and manipulate foundational mathematical objects (such as sets and functions) and processes. C Construct and show understanding of simple proofs by, for example, induction, contradiction etc. D Express mathematical ideas in a clear and concise manner.
The module will be taught through lectures and tutorials with (almost) weekly quizzes.
