Pre-Calculus

Module Title Pre-Calculus
Module Level Level 0
Module Credits 2.50
Academic Year 2024/25
Semester SEM1

Aims and Fit of Module

This module runs from Week 2 until Week 6 and is designed for non-local students who do not have the required background to undertake the MTH023 Calculus II module.
Unlike MTH023, this module does not carry any prerequisites and is suitable for students who have not studied mathematics at the senior high school level.
The aims of the module are to:
1. Provide students with the necessary background in algebra and functions (not including trigonometric functions) to be able to comprehend the concepts and techniques required in differential and integral calculus;
2. Promote students’ ability to work independently and acquire problem solving skills.

Learning outcomes

A Use algebra to manipulate algebraic expressions including rational expressions, power functions, and radicals;
B Confidently apply algebraic operations to manipulate and solve linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic equations;
C Recognise and sketch graphs of linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions
D Note: Trigonometric functions are not covered in this module nor in the follow up Introductory Calculus I MTH027 module.

Method of teaching and learning

Students are expected to attend about 6 hours of formal lectures and either supervised problem classes or a 2 hour tutorial in a typical week. Lectures and tutorials will introduce students to the academic content and practical skills which are the subject of the module, while tutorials and problem classes will allow students to practice those skills.
In addition to the time of classes, students will be expected to devote the unsupervised time to private study. Private study will provide time for reflection and consideration of lecture material and background reading. Continuous assessment, including home assignment marking, will be used to test to what extent practical skills have been learnt. Written examination at the end of the course constitutes the major part of assessment of the academic achievement.
