Module Title Mathematical Methods for Physics I
Module Level Level 1
Module Credits 5
Academic Year 2026/27
Semester SEM2

Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to equip students with the essential mathematical techniques required for advanced study and research in physics. The module covers key concepts such as complex functions, ordinary differential equations, Fourier series, Laplace transforms, as well as an introduction to distribution theory. The topics addressed in this module will prepare students to solve physical problems in various fields, including classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and electrodynamics.

Learning outcomes

A Calculate integrals in the complex domain and contour integrals using Cauchy’s theorem B Solve ordinary differential equations using standard analytical methods C Apply the Fourier series to represent functions D Use the Laplace transform to solve differential equations E Apply elements of distribution theory to solve physical problems

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered through a combination of formal lectures and tutorials.
