Aims and Fit of Module

Cutting-edge technologies are expected to be continually applied into robotics design as the application could extend robotics’ capability to create more user cases in our daily lives. In this module, it firstly introduces recent applications in robotics design from various domains and perspectives, then analyze the potential candidates of emerging technologies currently explored by both the industry or academia. Meanwhile, typical methodologies e.g. design thinking and practices are proposed to facilitate a holistic understanding of various scenarios when applying cutting-edge technology to refresh robotics design. This module will explore the development of intelligent robots in the context of innovative applications using contemporary cutting-edge technologies e.g. dynamic modeling, and machine learning into robotics design for a wide range of users and applications.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching philosophy of the module adopts the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially the use of problem-based assessment which is project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments. This module will be delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, and lab practice. Teaching will be conducted using problem-based learning, with problems, approaches, guided and unguided practices embedded in the sessions. General transferable skills are developed through the presentation of written and oral reports.
