Aims and Fit of Module

The module is intended for students who have completed level 1b or equivalent of the Spanish language. Completion of level 2 will broadly achieve an outcome at level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The module will integrate topics with the study of the language, with an emphasis on consolidating knowledge and use of grammar.
The module aims:
• To consolidate and revise prior knowledge.
• To develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Spanish.
• To enable students to function effectively in a general social context.
• To extend lexis and knowledge of grammar.
• To develop basic essay writing skills.
• To promote intercultural understanding.
All the Spanish modules have been developed taking into account the QAA benchmark statements for a full or minor component in a language. QAA benchmark statements relate to the language component comprising at least one-third of the study total, resulting in students at the end of the relevant degree programme being at level C1. These Spanish modules make up less than one third of study and so the realistic minimum that would be achieved for a student starting at a beginner level in year 1 is CEFR B2, though students with some initial knowledge would be at C1.

Learning outcomes

A. Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the main Spanish linguistic principles, grammar structures and registers at an A1 level.
B. Identify basic aspects of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
C. Produce suitable texts in Spanish at Level A1.
D. Demonstrate spoken communication skills at level A1.
E. Comprehend suitable content in Spanish at level A1 across a range of different formats.

Method of teaching and learning

• Core teaching takes place through Spanish language and study skills workshops with an emphasis on student-to-student interaction and all student participation.
• In addition, there will be guided reading and directed study to enable students to prepare for and reinforce class input and develop autonomous learning strategies. Online resources will also be used to complement contact sessions and workshops whereby additional information and resources can be made available electronically and on-line discussions between students and tutors can be held.
