The aim of this Year 1 module is to prepare students for study on the program of BA Accounting. The module introduces students the structure and roles of the accounting profession, the history, development, and challenges of International Accounting Standards (IAS/IFRS), and the fundamental principles and techniques of accounting. Students also learn contemporary issues in accounting and financial management.
A. Develop a basic understanding of why accounting and accounting professionals are important for modern business. B. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the need for International Accounting Standards (IAS/IFRS), and the determinants and consequences of adopting IAS/IFRS globally. C. Have an awareness of contemporary issues and challenges in the fields of accounting and financial management. D. Develop the English language and study skills of students within the context of Accounting.
The module will be delivered through lectures. Lectures will provide guide and introduction to topics, case analysis, hypothetical situations and guest speech. Students may also be provided with online language/study skills support from the English Language Centre (ELC) to help them engage with module content. Some sessions may be co-taught by staff from the English Language Centre, who will use activities to further develop the English language skills of students within the context of accounting.
