Diseases, like infectious disease and non-communicable diseases could affect individuals, families and the society. This module will provide Year 1 students the role of governments, health organizations, healthcare providers and patients in promoting health and preventing diseases.
A. Describe the basic structure and function of a healthcare system, identifying the roles of governments, health organisations, healthcare providers, and patients within it. B. Identify and explain ethical issues that arise in healthcare contexts, demonstrating awareness of competing values and perspectives. C. Explain, at a foundational level, the causes and transmission of infectious diseases and their impact on individuals and society. D. Describe approaches to the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases, drawing on evidence from relevant public health examples. E. Identify the nature and societal impact of non-communicable diseases and evaluate the roles of different stakeholders in addressing them. F. Communicate ideas about health, disease, and society clearly and constructively through group-based inquiry and collaborative project work.
Course content will be delivered primarily via standard lectures that will be accompanied by suitable lecture handouts (also available on LMO). Tutorials will be conducted as studio sessions to facilitate group discussions for problem-based learning.
