Pharmacoeconomics is the branch of health economics that focuses on weighing the costs and benefits of a particular intervention in comparison with an analogous alternative. This type of analysis is critical given the goal of maximizing value for patients, healthcare payers and society in light of increasingly scarce resources. The aims of this module are • introduce students to the fundamental methods of pharmacoeconomic analysis including the terminology used in pharmacoeconomics, research methods frequently used in pharmacoeconomics, and the role of pharmacoeconomics in the drug development process and health care decision making relevant to the practice of pharmacy. • prepare students for careers in developing and implementing individualized treatment plans, taking into consideration of pharmacoeconomic factors.
A. Define and deploy key words and terms used in pharmacoeconomics field. B. Critically evaluate topics relating to Pharmacoeconomics. C. Develop interpersonal, academic communication skills and demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills D. Develop practical and subject specific skills (transferable skills) including being able to apply pharmacoeconomics to drug therapy decision and ormulary management. E. Categorise and explain the elements of Pharmacoeconomics analysis. F. Identify and appraise the elements of pharmacoeconomic study and associated estimated costs.
The module is delivered through a combination of lectures and tutorials over a period of 13 weeks. In lectures, students are introduced to the core principles, major methodology, and common topics and issues in the area of pharmacoeconomics. Tutorials are given as a platform to address any specific question or issue from individual students.
