Architectural Thinking and Representation aims to introduce students to the ways architects observe, interpret and communicate the world through visual, spatial and conceptual forms of representation. The module develops fundamental skills of architectural inquiry by exploring drawing, mapping, diagramming and modelling not only as techniques of communication, but also as tools for investigation, critical thinking and creative exploration. Through the study of architectural precedents, environments and visual culture, students are encouraged to develop an awareness of how architecture engages with people, places and the built environment. The module concentrates on four interconnected aspects: • Understanding to see: To develop skills of observation, perception and critical interpretation of architectural, urban and environmental conditions. • Understanding to think: To introduce architectural thinking as a process of inquiry, analysis and conceptual exploration. • Understanding to draw: To explore drawing, mapping, diagramming and modelling as tools for investigation, development and communication of ideas. • Understanding to communicate: To develop the ability to represent and communicate architectural concepts through visual, spatial and narrative forms.

The module is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and studio-based exercises. Lectures introduce key architectural concepts, precedents and approaches to observation, analysis and representation, providing students with a foundation for understanding how architects engage with the built environment. Through examples drawn from architecture, urban environments and visual culture, students are introduced to different ways of seeing, interpreting and communicating spatial conditions and architectural ideas. Seminars and studio activities promote active learning through observation exercises, drawing, mapping, diagramming, modelling and critical discussion. Students are encouraged to explore architecture as both a way of thinking and a mode of communication, developing their ability to investigate, interpret and represent architectural phenomena through a range of visual and spatial techniques. Tutorial feedback and peer discussion support the progressive development of coursework,fostering critical reflection, visual literacy and the foundational skill required for further architectural study.
