To introduce students to Asian architecture with its associated technologies, cultural connections and urban settings and its development from ancient times to the twenty-first century.
A Identify and exemplify main periods and principal features of Asian architecture and urban development, with a focus on China.
B Relate Asian built forms to an understanding of the influence of architectural history and theory on the spatial, social and technological aspects of architecture.
C Apply and present specific methods of building survey and documentation.
The module uses lectures and readings, case studies and field trips to explain key developments in Asian architectural and urban history. Essays test individual learning and presentational skills. Drawing exercises help students to form a visual memory of architecture. An examination tests students' learning and invites students to discuss how they relate historical architectural developments to their own designing and design thinking.
