This module aims to introduce students to the fundamental principles underpinning modern organic chemistry with emphasis on biomolecular applications, reaction mechanisms, and tools for small organic molecules structure determination. This course will also introduce the classification, properties, and chemical reactions of carbohydrates, amino acids, and nucleic acids.
A. Determine organic compound structures using different spectroscopic techniques (MS, IR, and NMR)
B. Understand chemical mechanisms of enzymes-catalyzed reactions
C. Understand structural and basic chemistry reactivity of real biological molecules (carbohydrates, peptides, and nucleic acids)
D. Know bioactive compounds synthesized by chemistry reactions
E. Solve simple theoretical and practical problems in organic chemistry
This course will be taught by a series of lectures and lab practicals in Organic Chemistry mainly with Biological significance. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge by completing related quiz/assignments, and practical labs.
