Serving as a foundational course, it prepares students for advanced modules in game design and development, and is also a starting point for studies in other media and technology. The module also provides an overview of the video game technological discipline and the frontier technology applications in the relevant industry.

Learning outcomes

A. Demonstrate an understanding of the essential building blocks of games. B. Develop the skills to critically analyze games and their cultural significance. C. Show the understanding of creative game design and industry applications independently and collaboratively.

Method of teaching and learning

The module will employ a blend of lectures and practicals to deliver its content. Lectures will primarily introduce the foundational elements of game analysis and the terminology necessary for conducting thorough game criticism. During lab/practicals, students will have the opportunity to select a specific game they have played (or a genre or cultural phenomenon related to games that interest them). They will pose critical questions and independently or collaboratively conduct in-depth analyses. Moreover, students will apply classroom learning to solve real-world problems through Project-based Learning (PBL), Object-based Learning (OBL), Research-led Learning, and Self-directed Learning in a fun, immersive and interactive way. There will be interactive sessions to spark creativity and problem-solving skills, and collaborative exercises to foster teamwork and entrepreneurship. Outside of scheduled class time, students are expected to dedicate unsupervised hours to private study of course materials and project-based learning, teaching, and assessment.
