Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to support you in developing your ability to identify and propose emerging socio-cultural trends in order to make meaningful contribution to your field of practice. Through evidence-based processes you will learn a variety of approaches to embed theory and research into your creative practice. With a focus on qualitative methodology you will be introduced to methodologies such as ethnography; phenomenology; intervention; and more. On successful completion of this module you should have an improved ability to situate and disseminate your practice within the historical, contemporary, and emerging creative industries.

Learning outcomes

A Demonstrate ability to apply secondary and primary research methods to inform creative practice.
B Demonstrate independent intellectual rigour in making and substantiating original arguments and claims in your field of study.
C Demonstrate ability to work independently and collaboratively to develop original and appropriate responses to open-ended technical and/or aesthetic topics.
D Demonstrate ability to reflect on research and its key findings through the chosen media; website, film, exhibition or bound text.

Method of teaching and learning

This module will be delivered by a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars. Lectures will be designed to provide essential information and introduce students to the basic tools of research and analysis, relevant to the creative industries, including practice in application. Tutorials will be designed to support student learning through individual and group based activities to inform their learning journey on the module. Seminars will be designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop their professional presentation skills and the practice of disseminating their thinking through a variety of traditional and contemporary media.
