This module provides an introduction to the major elements of Chinese civilisation and to the scholarly literature devoted to Chinese thought, religion, and worldview in general.
A. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the intellectual, literary and religious developments that characterize Chinese civilization. B. Identify the great works of Chinese philosophical and religious literature and show appreciate of them in a comparative perspective. C. Show familiarity with the overall contents of the Confucian classics and their influence on traditional Chinese society D. Demonstrate understanding of the conditions that led to the rise of China’s characteristic cultural developments. E. Demonstrate an appreciation of how traditional Chinese thought influences the present-day worldview of the PRC. F. Show awareness of the principal debates in the academic literature about Chinese literature, religion and philosophy. G. Analyse and discuss the ways in which different kinds of sources treat information.
