The module introduces students to Chinese literature since 1919. The time period is broken into two subsections. Part one focuses on the establishment and flourishing of modern Chinese literature period to 1949. The module discusses its literary styles, themes and interactions with society. Part two considers literature in the PRC, starting with the socialist realism of the Mao era. Since 1978, with the advent of Reform and Opening, Chinese intellectual life has changed significantly. There have been dramatic changes in the evolution of Chinese literature, some of which echo earlier periods and literatures and some of which represent new departures for Chinese literary life. The module considers these as well as aspects of literary development elsewhere in the Chinese-speaking world.

B. Critically examine the complex interactions between Chinese literature, politics, and social change
C. Identify and analyse multiple cultural visions, imaginations and aesthetics in literary writings
D. Undertake textual analysis of thematic ideas and techniques in literary texts
E. Demonstrate understanding of the diversity of Chinese-language writings, in terms of categories, genres, schools and styles
F. Use analytical skills to present arguments.
Lectures and seminars for rehearsal of weekly topics. Teaching and learning is through the medium of English, and no knowledge of Chinese is required.
