Theatre and performance in China have distinct origins and evolution. This module provides an introduction to the history and practice of theatre and performance in all its diversity across the Chinese-speaking world.
A Have a clear understanding of the evolution of Chinese theatre from its origins to the present day
B Gain knowledge and understanding about the dynamics of Chinese performance in the Twentieth Century
C Appreciate the differences between the various categories of indigenous and Western-inspired performance genres in Chinese
D Gain ability to undertake analysis of audiovisual recordings and dramatic texts
E Acquire understanding of the interaction between performance and social, political, and literary currents
F Gain familiarity with the diversity of Chinese-language performance, including regional theatre, Overseas performance, and Taiwanese and Hong Kong theatre
Lectures and seminars for rehearsal of weekly topics. Teaching and learning is through the medium of English, and no knowledge of Chinese is required.
