This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts, theories, and key debates within the global field of Cultural Heritage Studies, before applying them specifically to the Chinese context. It familiarises students with the immense diversity and complexity of China’s cultural heritage, encompassing both tangible and intangible forms. It guides students to analyse the political, social, and economic roles that cultural heritage plays in contemporary China, including its use in constructing national and local identities, fostering tourism and economic development, and facilitating international relations. Students are facilitated to critically examine the key issues and controversies surrounding cultural heritage in China, such as the tensions between preservation and modernization, state-led narratives versus local and community meanings, different powers and narratives in heritage-making, and the impact of UNESCO World Heritage designation. It aims to develop students’ ability to critically evaluate primary and secondary sources, engage with scholarly debates, and articulate sophisticated, evidence-based arguments in both written and oral forms on topics concerning Chinese cultural heritage.
