Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of Suzhou, the university’s locale, a city of profound historical significance and dynamic contemporary development in China. Suzhou’s historical legacy as a cultural and economic hub, its rapid transformation into a modern industrial and high-tech center, and its ongoing challenges in balancing heritage with development, reflect themes pertinent to numerous cities across China. Focusing on both Suzhou and the Lower Yangtze Delta region, the lectures and seminar discussions explore key themes in Chinese urban, social, economic, cultural, and political history, while paying close attention to contemporary issues of development, urbanization, governance, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainability. When situation allows, this module will provide authentic, experiential learning through field trips, site visits, and direct engagement with local contexts. The module will enable students to understand the broader context and complexities of Chinese cities, develop students’ ability to apply diverse perspectives to studying the city, and allow students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world observations and experiences within a Chinese urban environment.
