Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this module is to give students a deeper understanding of Chinese history from late imperial to modern China and introduce scholarly debates, materials and important methodologies of studying Chinese history. The module highlights a cultural approach to understand Chinese history and it guides students to understand Chinese history within a global context.

Learning outcomes

A. Describe and evaluate different approaches to late imperial and modern Chinese history. B. Critically evaluate the historical transformations and continuities from late imperial to modern China. C. Apply a variety of theoretical frameworks to study Chinese history within a global context. D. Demonstrate critical understanding of the creation/recreation of tradition and history in modern China. E. Compile and evaluate primary and secondary sources on Chinese history. F. Apply interdisciplinary methodologies for the studies of Chinese history.

Method of teaching and learning

In the seminars students will able to have an in-depth discussion of weekly topics, and also to present their analysis of a specific topic from the syllabus. The essay will hone students’ analytical and writing abilities.
