This module aims to provide an overview of the history of China’s economic development since 1949, with a particular focus on the political economy of transition since 1978. It sets out to introduce the students to the path of institutional reforms by emphasising the role played by the state in key economic sectors. The economic development strategies and related social outcomes of the reform process will also be discussed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of China’s structural transformation.
