Aims and Fit of Module

The aim of this module is to provide conceptually and empirically informed insights about the multiple cities and regions that conform the complex economy of China, assessing its transformations and future challenges. This module will employ a wide variety of case studies that will engage students in the analysis of different sets of data. Moreover, the assessment regime of this module emphasizes a practical approach towards the understanding of the urban economies of China.

Learning outcomes

A. Assess the main concepts and issues in studying cities and regions from a comparative international perspective. B. Critically examine the main transformations and challenges of the cities and regions of the Chinese economy, emphasizing in the diverse roles of its multiple actors. C. Identify and examine the main industries in developing and developed urban economies. D. Identify the main city-regions of China and synthetize the connections they establish to shape the national economy. E. Assess the characteristics and operational principles of the territorial configuration of the Chinese state through the spatial administrative hierarchy in relation to the development of urban economies. F. Work with qualitative and quantitative sets of data to structure a comprehensive assessment of the economic issues that characterize Chinese cities.

Method of teaching and learning

Lectures will introduce students to crucial skills and content in a dialogic manner, facilitated by Generative AI use. In the seminars, students will engage in-depth discussion of weekly topics, and also to present their analysis of a specific topic from the syllabus. Generative AI will be integrated into learning and teaching, as well as in the assessment process.
