Aims and Fit of Module

This module aims to cultivate students' understanding of fundamental physics and its applications in engineering design, thereby laying the foundation for core principles of engineering design. Furthermore, this module introduces sustainability principles and the Conception, Design, Implementation, and Operation (CDIO) methodology for engineering systems, while fostering students' awareness of engineering ethics, diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) in professional practice. In addition, this module aims to enhance students' communication, teamwork, and management skills necessary for effective individual and team collaboration in engineering contexts.

Learning outcomes

A. Apply fundamental physics and its applications in the process of engineering design, such as Newton's laws, work and energy, momentum, degree of freedom of rigid body, and vibrations. B. Discuss sustainability in engineering projects, and the concept of Conceiving, Designing, Implementing, and Operating (CDIO) real-world systems. C. Explain the basics of engineering ethics, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in design practices. D. Apply communication and management skills within a team and as individuals.

Method of teaching and learning

This module employs an alternating approach of formal lectures and practical sessions. Lectures aim to introduce fundamental knowledge and principles, providing students with essential engineering theories. Practical sessions provide hands-on guidance to cultivate students' design and engineering skills, and introduce practical trainings to students about design and build as individuals and groups.
