The module aims to introduce the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics and to lay a solid foundation for subsequent work involving civil engineering hydraulics, water engineering, building services engineering, industrial and product design.
A. Understand the fundamental properties of fluids, units and dimensions associated with fluid flows.
B. Apply the principles of hydrostatics in problems related to submerged and floating bodies.
C. Understand the fundamental hydrodynamic equations and apply them to simple flow measuring devices.
D. Understand the concepts of a thermodynamic system and state.
E. Understand the fundamental principles and corollaries of the thermodynamic laws.
F. Understand the physical interpretation and quantities of thermodynamic potentials.
The material in this module is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and supervised practical sessions. General transferable skills on data analysis and results interpretation are developed through the laboratory report and numerical assignments.
