This module aims to develop students’ ability to design steel structural elements using codes of practice and to analyse the structural behaviour of steel portal frames with the use of theory of plasticity, specifically the first and second order theory. Moreover, students will be exposed to design methods which incorporate material and geometric non-linarites’ to design single-storey portal frames within the context of Eurocode 3.
A. Understand the principles of limit state design, steel material behaviours, failure modes of various structural steel members, as well as health and safety issues related to design. B. Implement Eurocode-3’s requirements to design steel beams and columns subjected to actions such as axial loading, shear, bending moment, torsional moment, and combinations of those actions. C. Apply engineering knowledge to conceptualize the design of steel buildings. D. Implement the theory of plasticity to design single-storey steel buildings within the context of Eurocode 3. E. Implement second-order theory to design against buckling single-storey steel buildings
The module is delivered through formal lectures and tutorials.
