This module aims to help students with no prior Chinese knowledge to establish a foundation in their Chinese study so that they will be able to meet the basic requirements for daily social communication. This module will mainly focus on the training of listening and speaking skills, and will help to bring these skills to a level equivalent to CEFR A1. There will also be a focus on helping students to read some Chinese characters that they will regularly encounter in daily life. This module is available to all exchange students.
A. Demonstrate understanding of simple words and phrases when spoken in Chinese
B. Demonstrate recognition of familiar words, phrases and simple sentences in written Chinese texts
C. Deliver personal information and interact orally in a simple way in Chinese
D. Identify very basic aspects of Chinese cultures and societies
This module takes a communicative approach to language teaching, and involves a high level of interaction between teacher and students. Teaching and assessment will revolve around the setting and completion of specified language tasks.
This module includes 2*2 hours seminars plus 1 hour lecture per week. Students will have 4 hours per week of integrated skills class, covering listening and speaking skills, as well as some reading skills and the Pinyin Romanization system. The lecture, which is a large group practice and review session, will be designed to support student learning in and after class.
