Modern Chinese 2 aims to introduce the basic knowledge of Modern Chinese, with emphasis on the study of Chinese grammar, rhetoric and pragmatics. The module is dedicated to building a solid foundation in the Chinese language and preparing the students China Studies for their future study, research or teaching of the Chinese language.
A Demonstrate familiarity with key aspects of Chinese language structure and the major linguistic properties of Modern Chinese
B Demonstrate understanding of the system of Chinese grammar, rhetoric and pragmatics
C Explain the characteristic of Chinese grammar, rhetoric and pragmatics
D Apply linguistic theories or approaches to analyze the Chinese language
Lectures and seminars for rehearsal of weekly topics. Basic concepts and important theories in analyzing Chinese language will be introduced in lectures. Presentations and report-submissions would be incorporated in seminar teaching. Students are given opportunity to analyze the syntactic and rhetorical features of the Chinese texts. The teacher will act as a facilitator of discussion and commentator on students’ opinions.
