This module aims to prepare students for entry into the BA Communication Studies. To that end, it exposes students to some of the fundamental issues that scholars of media and communication examine, for instance media effects and the influence of technology, and to foundational vocabulary that scholars and media professionals use. In addition, the module provides guidance to students on study skills and learning techniques in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
A.Define foundational terms related to media and communication and their academic study.
B.Summarize and illustrate some of the fundamental issues explored in the academic study of media and communication.
C.Demonstrate an understanding of learning practices and techniques in the Humanities & Social Sciences.
The lecture introduces basic terms and fundamental issues relevant to media and communication and their academic study. One seminar hour is devoted to further exploration of the lecture content. The other seminar hour provides guidance to students on study skills and learning techniques in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Some seminars may be co-taught by staff from the English Language Centre, who will use activities to further develop the English language skills of students within the context of Communication Studies.
Students may also be provided with online language/study skills support from the English Language Centre (ELC) to help them engage with module content.
