Aims and Fit of Module

The module aims to provide a historical overview of the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) together with a consideration of the promise and risks associated with this development. It will address the mediation of identities and social relations enabled by digital media and the interplay between digital technologies, capital, culture and people’s everyday life. Students will explore the different uses and experiences of digital media, ranging from identity construction and self-presentation online, to new forms of sociality, creativity, civic engagement and mobilisation. Issues such as virtual communities, youth culture and privacy will also be discussed and students will have the opportunity to reflect on the affordances and constraints of computer-mediated communication.
