This module will examine transformations of cultural and creative industries in the global advancement of the digital economy. It will provide students with an in-depth understanding of a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of digital platform-based cultural practices, creative productions, and business models. By including cases of both China and US-based digital platforms and their global expansion strategies, the module will critically reflect on theoretical debates such as the platform economy, data economy, sharing economy, on-demand/gig economy, influencer marketing, platform labor, and algorithmic management. Creative media forms and their associated industrial transformations including short videos, selfie, vlogs, mobile live streaming, music streaming, and Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) will be discussed in class.
