The module aims to help students develop skills in the critical evaluation of the reception and consumption of global media content. It discusses theories of reception and consumption of media, with a focus on the representation of marginalized groups, including women, ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ, both in China and across the world. Other topics discussed include global celebrity and fandom. The module introduces students the myriad ways in which different cultures and groups across the world react to and make use of global media content by presenting case studies of the diverse reception and use made of global media products around the world. The module fits in the track Global Media and China because it examines media users’ interpretations and reactions from global perspectives, including in the Chinese context.
