As an optional choice in Year 1, Semester 1, the module aims to provide knowledge and skills that contribute to the university graduate attribute framework in any curriculum. As a prominently practical module, it aims to engage students collaboratively on the themes of sustainability and social innovation, developing key competencies in these areas. In particular, • Explore innovative approaches and methods to place-making that prioritise environmental and social sustainability. • Equip students with knowledge and practical skills of design and making of small green space, such as community garden. • Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills essential for driving sustainable innovation. • Encourage students to become engaged and responsible global citizens committed to building a more sustainable future.
A. Explain the principles underpinning the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their practical applications. B. Propose alternative, innovative and sustainable place-making solutions. C. Develop a team action research project to address a sustainability issue. D. Apply practical skills in sustainable place-making to small green public space.
The module is a project-based module that may entail collaboration with Campus Management Office or local communities. It is mainly taught by interactive workshops including lectures to introduce the main concepts and hands-on lab tasks to develop innovative ideas and practise hands-on skills.
