This module aims to introduce students to the generic research process, principles of ethical research, and general research techniques. Students will learn data collection methods for both quantitative and qualitative data collection and how to carry out primary and secondary research, for different purposes across engineering and manufacturing disciplines. The distinction between basic and applied research and the different ways in which research can be conducted and reported will also be emphasized. These knowledges will prepare students for independent study of their master’s dissertation and module projects, as well as if they intend to pursue a research career in the future.
The module also aims to introduce data analysis techniques for qualitative and quantitative research. Students will have the opportunity to practise skills in data analysis. There is an option within this for students to follow an advanced quantitative or mixed methods pathway, of relevance to the degree being undertaken.

The teaching philosophy of the module adopts the philosophy of Syntegrative Education. This has meant that the teaching delivery pattern, which follows more intensive block teaching, allows more meaningful contribution from industry partners. This philosophy is carried through also in terms of assessment, with reduction on the use of exams and increase in coursework, especially the use of problem-based assessment which is project focused. The delivery pattern provides space in the semester for students to concentrate on completing the assessments.
This module will be delivered through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Teaching will be conducted using problem-based learning, with problems embedded in the lectures. General transferable skills are developed through the presentation of written and oral reports.
