This module explores key theories and techniques in counselling for children and families, with a strong emphasis on the integration of theory and practice in real-world contexts. Students engage in practice-based learning, including simulated and case-based counselling scenarios, supported by digital tools and AI-enabled feedback systems (e.g., transcript analysis and AI tutoring). The module further develops students’ ability to critically evaluate practice and design evidence-informed interventions to address complex educational and family-related challenges.
A. Integrate counselling theories, developmental frameworks, and multicultural perspectives to inform evidence-based practice in child and family education contexts. B. Demonstrate and critically reflect on core counselling skills (e.g., active listening, empathy, formulation, intervention planning) through simulated or practice-based contexts. C. Critically evaluate and apply ethical, safeguarding, and legal frameworks to decision-making in complex counselling scenarios involving children and families. D. Analyse practice-based evidence and design research-informed counselling or family support interventions to address real-world needs.
The module adopts a Research-Led Project-Based Learning (RLPBL) approach, integrating lectures, seminars, and practice-based workshops. Teaching combines theoretical input with experiential learning through counselling simulations, case-based discussions, and collaborative problem-solving tasks. Learning is structured around iterative cycles of observation, analysis, practice, and reflection. AI-supported tools (e.g., AI tutors, transcript analysis, and feedback systems) are embedded to enhance skill development, reflective practice, and evidence-based decision-making. Real-world cases and scenarios are incorporated to strengthen authenticity and professional relevance.
