This module is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and techniques used for conducting research in the field of global education. The module will not only introduce quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, but also give the students an overview of what is research in social sciences and the research process. Students will gain theoretical and practical experiences in formulating research questions, selecting appropriate research designs and choosing suitable methods for data collection and analysis. Ethical considerations in research will also be explored.

Learning outcomes

A. Develop research questions and differentiate between various research designs to address specific research objectives. B. Identify and explain the key components of the scientific method and its application for data collection, such as surveys, interviews, and experiments. C. Interpret and present basic data analysis methods for quantitative and qualitative research, such as measures of central tendency and variability, basic inferential statistical tests, thematic analysis and grounded theory. D. Conduct ethical research by adhering to institutional and professional ethical guidelines in all stages of the research process.

Method of teaching and learning

The teaching sessions are interactive and divided into three components: lectures, lab/practicals and tutorials. The lab/practicals will build on the materials covered in the lectures based on the training in the practical issues regarding data collection and analysis. The tutorials will build on the materials covered in the lectures based on the training in other areas, such as development of research questions, research design, application of research methods, and ethical issues.
