Social and Affective Development of Gifted Students

Module Title Social and Affective Development of Gifted Students
Module Level Level 4
Module Credits 5
Academic Year 2026/27
Semester SEM1

Aims and Fit of Module

This module focuses on the social and emotional development of gifted and talented students, introducing the key knowledge and skills needed to effectively support their healthy psychosocial development. By systematically analysing and synthesising current research literature, students will explore the unique affective characteristics and needs of these learners, including diversity issues, family and parenting concerns, and current educational approaches, to address complex developmental problems and formulate evidence-based conclusions. Acting as reflective educators, students will critically evaluate and integrate major theories of social-emotional, identity, and career development, turning abstract developmental theories into concrete, evidence-based counselling interventions and pedagogical practices that promote holistic well-being. Moving from theory to practice, students will apply interdisciplinary thinking to develop original, research-informed frameworks and tailored support solutions that reshape educational design. Finally, cultivating an applied innovator mindset, students will design and pitch feasible, evidence-informed initiatives to specific stakeholders, demonstrating the persuasive communication skills necessary to advocate for program scalability and real-world student impact. To support these highly applied, forward-looking goals, students will also learn the use of digital tools and relevant AI and GenAI-based options to enhance their program design and educational strategies.
