Knowing and Understanding
A. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of this module, students should have: an understanding of the wave nature of light, dielectric waveguides, optical fibers; an understanding of stimulated emission and lasers; and an understanding of photo-detectors and photovoltaic devices.
B. Intellectual Abilities
On successful completion of this module, students should have: the ability to analyze light transmission in a medium (e.g. fiber) and the ability to determine components (fibers and lasers) to meet a specification.
C. Practical Skills
On successful completion of this module, students should have: the ability to determine device properties from the characteristics, the ability to calculate the basic quantities of optical fibers, the ability to perform simple analysis of light transmission along an optical fiber, and the ability to use LEDs, semiconductor lasers and optical fibers.
D. General Transferable Skills
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to show experience and enhancement of the following key skills: independent learning and optoelectronic components analysis.
E. Laser Safety Awareness
On successful completion of the module, students should have: an awareness of laser safety associated with consumer electronic products and various commercial equipment; the ability to use lasers safely.
This module will be delivered by a combination of formal lectures, problem classes, experiments, class demonstrations and case studies.
