This module’s major aim is to provide students an overview of ecology. It aims to provide students with an introduction to the basic concepts of the earth system, ecology and evolution. In addition to placing ecology, within a geosystem and evolution context, it highlights human impacts and uses case studies to reflect on human impacts. The module includes the basic concepts of ecology and specifically the concepts of biodiversity and species interactions and how these are changed by human influences.
A Demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of ecology
B Classify basic concepts in biodiversity, species interactions and ecosystems in the context of evolution
C Classify the process of environmental changes over geological time scales and the significance of human-induced global change
D Develop basic research skills in understanding ecological data, scientific reading and academic collaboration
E Develop global citizenship through the use of examples from different biomes
This module is delivered by a weekly lecture session and a seminar session to cover various environmental topics, which is supported by reading assignments & class discussions. The seminars include case studies to develop basic research skills and apply the knowledge to real-world case studies in environmental issues.
